Drawing upon biblical exegesis, rabbinic literature, classical learning, and the writings of earlier Christian Kabbalists, Gaffarel argues that the mysteries of the Christian faith had been foreshadowed within the Hebrew tradition centuries before the coming of Christ. Rather than treating the Kabbalah as a system of magical speculation, he presents it as a profound theological and philosophical discipline worthy of serious scholarly study.

Accompanying this treatise is the rare Codicum Cabalisticorum Manuscriptorum (1651), a remarkable bibliographical catalog compiled nearly three decades later. Far more than a simple inventory of manuscripts, Gaffarel identifies and describes the Hebrew and Kabbalistic texts that, according to him, had been consulted by the great Renaissance philosopher Giovanni Pico della Mirandola in developing his influential synthesis of Christian Kabbalah. At a time when many of these manuscripts remained inaccessible to European scholars, Gaffarel sought to preserve a record of their existence, contents, and significance, producing one of the earliest systematic guides to the textual foundations of the Kabbalistic tradition available to Christian readers.
